
Micro analysis:
Camera Angle + Framing
The camera angle gives a very close and personal feeling to the shot. With the Close-Up, the audience is very much centering their attention on the character and what they may be looking at outside of the mise-en-scene, invading their personal space as if being forced into something the audience may not want to be apart of. This in turn creates restrictive viewing, taking any ability to control the characters gaze or thoughts away from an audience. Leaving a sense of unnerving mystery and wonderment as we are left looking into the shady face of someone who looks lost and worried or otherwise occupying a very busy mind; unable to see straight.
Lighting:
By replicateing naturalistic lighting coming from outside the window to the the left of the character as we see it from the image, the director is able to convey the message that this character may have something to hide the as light source is split from light to shadow almost directly down the centre of his face, indicating a potential for a second shady personality and implying there is something the character wishes to hide.
Costume:
From what can be seen, although not much, is the top of the characters hooded jacket. Hoodies are stereotypically associated with misguided youths, giving off bad connotations of vandalims, along with the bleak, colourless simplicity of the grey tone, makes an audience believe this person may be up to no good, or there is an aspect of his person that may not be quite right. Either showing a disregard for his clothing sense, or following a darker subculture in fashion.
Performance
From the performance you get the impression this is either a troubled youth or has spotted something very unplesent outside of the shot. His facial expression makes him look like a very paranoid character, almost Schizophrenic in nature.
Props + Location
There are no real significant props on show in this image, other than those blurred out in the depth of field, which is why I have decided to combine props with location. The location is set within a school community. Take away the character and this becomes a very normal, average school hallway scenario; students carrying books, lockers, students sporting all kinds of different fashion trends and normal lighting fixtures on the roof. But these props within the school location add alot of menace once you pull the character back into the picture. His facial identity does not match the friendly and everyday location/appliences, making the School/College location, one that should be very familiar to everyone, very alien. Removing the audience straight out of their traditional comfort zone alienates everyone; Adding unpredictability to any props or locations used.
DEPTH OF FIELD:
The strong depth of field in this image tells the audience to direct their attention to the boys facial expressions and displayed emotions and predominately the direction of his eyeline, up to the corner of the frame. the depth of field isolates the character from the rest of school life around him, focusing the film on his personal story and how he may become relevant.
